Common name: Leighton green, Leyland cypress. Botanical name: Cupressocyparis leylandii

Where found:

  • Especially on the Taranaki ringplain as shelter or specimen.
  • Tolerates most soil conditions from coastal to clay, but dislikes waterlogged soils.

 

Description:

  • Upright evergreen tree, pyramidal when young maturing to become densely columnar with ascending brances. Vigorous growth. Can be trimmed for shelter.
  • Deep green leaves in flattened or irregular sprays on compact, wide angled branches. A feathery, slightly drooping appearance.
  • Small yellow male pollen cones. Female strobili are small and green, developing into shiny cones 1-2 cm.
  • Smooth bark, brown when young, roughening as tree ages and becoming slightly flakey.
  • Tolerant of frost, wind and salt spray. Extremely hardy particularly to cold.
  • Moderate potential for timber.
