Description: |
- Small tree or shrub but also prostrate (low-growing), gnarled
and twisted when grown in harsh conditions.
- Thick fleshy leaves glossy dark green above, light green underneath.
Waxy, inrolled margins, prominent midvein and distinct venation
(vein pattern). Broad-oblong rounded to truncate, apex rounded,
2-3 or 6-8 cm long by 1.5-2 or 4-5 cm wide. Leaves are larger
when grown in shade and smaller in full sun. Distinct domatia
(small holes) in midveins of leaf underside
- Small 5mm long, funnel shaped flowers. Flowers October to November.
- Large numbers of berries 8-10mm long, orange or orange-red in
colour. Propagation by seed or semi hardwood cuttings
- Pale or greyish brown bark.
- Bird food (tui, bellbird, kereru).
- Tolerance: frost-low, salt-high, dryness-high, waterlogging-low
