Where found:

- Native to Europe.
- An important pasture grass in New Zealand.
It has nuisance value in lawns and sports fields and some natural
areas such as wetlands as the clumps make the surface uneven.
- Well-drained fertile sites.

Description: |
- Upright grass with plants up to 1.5 metres in diameter.
- This perennial grass is recognised by its velvety surface (soft,
hairy) on both sides of the leaves and its distinctive greyish
seed heads. The stems grow outwards along the ground (rhizomes)
then upwards to 1 metre.
- The flower heads are 100-200 mm long, often pink.
- Tolerant of frost/wind/salt, water logged soils.
