Where found:
|
- A native of South Africa
- Now common in parts of New Zealand, and rapidly
spreading.
- Prefers a well drained fertile soil.
- Veld grass has the
potential to invade sand dunes, cliffs, regenerating forest, riparian
areas and gardens.

| Description: |
- A perennial grass with stems to about 60cm long but it will
grow to twice that height to get more light. It is often sprawling
and has numerous seeds which germinate freely.
- The seeds are small and pale green and elliptic. They occur
on branched stems, with the branches spreading and drooping as
the seeds ripen. Flowers and fruits all year (one of the few winterflowering
grasses).
- The leaves are light green and the stems tend to fan out from
the growing point at ground level before growing straight up.
- Frost hardy and will grow in shade or full sun.
Control:
- Easily pulled but drops seeds that germinate in disturbed soil
- Destroy all seed heads
- Glyphosate (eg. Roundup) for large areas
