Gorse (Ulex europaeus)
Family: Fabaceae
Description:
Gorse is a woody, perennial scrub with sharp spines. The plant can grow up to 3 - 4 metres tall, and it has yellow pea-like flowers. In Taranaki, gorse flowers and seeds throughout the year.
Other names:
Furze, Whin.
Values at risk:
Agricultural production, through competition with pasture, or the suppression of forestry seedlings in planted forests. Suppression of biodiversity along riparian margins.
Strategy rule:

You must destroy all gorse on your property within 25 metres of your boundary.

How to destroy:

Hand pull small seedlings.

Mulch with mechanical cutters.

Stump treating or spraying with herbicides such as metsulfuron, triclopyr, picloram or glyphosate.
